Pond Log October 2010

October 2, 2010 - Did a partial water change today.  Added 8 oz of Microbe Lift PL, 25 ml of KoiZyme, 2 oz of Barley Extract with Peat, and cleaned off the 2" skimmer filter media.  At midnight, I noticed that the pump had stopped pumping, so after some switching back and forth, (LONG STORY) I was able to get my spare pump working.

October 3, 2010 - I noticed today that my water level was about 4" lower this afternoon than it was in the AM.  After some investigation, I noticed that barrel #1 was overflowing, even though the sealed top was in place.  I had to close a ball valve about a ¼ turn to prevent the overflow.  My media was clean, and there was no blockage.  I guess the back-up pump had a bit more power.  The pump that went bad worked almost two full seasons.

October 5, 2010 - Cleaned off the 2" skimmer filter media this AM, and added 1 oz of OneFix.  So far the water level is holding steady!

October 7, 2010 - Cleaned off the 2" skimmer filter media.  Water level holding steady.

October 10, 2010 - Cleaned off the 2" skimmer filter media.  Added the last of my Microbe Lift PL near the skimmer, about 8 oz.  Also added 25 ml of KoiZyme by the falls, and 2 oz of Barley Extract plus Peat near the falls.

October 11, 2010 - No school today, off for Columbus Day.  Clipped off the cat tails today and sunk them to the bottom of the pond.  Most of it was dried and dead, but there were some new sprouts looking like they were going to take off.  Might have to transplant next year, it looks like the roots are pot-bound.  Brought in one of the Great Heroin decoys.

October 15, 2010 - Cleaned off the 2" skimmer filter media.

October 18, 2010 - Cleaned off the 2" skimmer filter media.  Added 25ml of KoiZyme, 2oz of Barley Extract with Peat, and 3 tea spoons of cold weather bacteria.  Added some water due to evaporation.  Water looks very clear.

October 19, 2010 - Took out the tropical plant today, along with the block I set them on during the summer.

October 20, 2010 - Took out the pond lights today.  I cleaned and stored them for the winter.  I also removed the two wood duck decoys and put them away as well.

October 22, 2010 - Cleaned off the 2" skimmer filter media.  Added 25ml of KoiZyme, 2oz of Barley Extract with Peat, and 3 tea spoons of cold weather bacteria.  Also added 3oz of blue pond tint.  I noticed a lot of string algae again near the skimmer, and coming off the falls.

October 25, 2010 - Cleaned off the 2" skimmer filter media.  Added 2 oz of OneFix.

October 26, 2010 - Added the black leaf net due to high winds forcasted.

October 28,  2010 - Cleaned off the 2" skimmer filter media. Added 2 oz of OneFix.

October 30, 2010 - Closed down the pond for the season.  Started at noon and finished at 5:00.
  • Removed the black leaf net put on earlier in the week.
  • Pumped about a foot of water out of the pond.
  • Pumped out the skimmer pit.
  • Removed the pump and stored in 5 gallon bucket in fresh water.
  • Pressure washed the skimmer pit media, and the Matala Mat media.
  • Put an air pump hose into both the pond and the skimmer pit.
  • Put on the white, thin mesh, winter cover over the pond. (See Photo Below)
  • Removed all bacteria media from the two 55 gallon barrels. (See Photo Below)
  • Rinsed out the two 55 gallon barrels.
  • Rinsed off the bacteria media with fresh water. (See Photo Below)
  • Put all the tools away after closing the pond.
  • Stored all the bacteria media in the large garbage receptacle near the garage door.
October 31, 2010 - Closed up the two 55 gallon barrels for the season.

Pond Log June 2010

June 1, 2010 - Put in 4 tabs of Muck Defense.  I am now currently out of Muck Defense tabs, I will reorder before the next application date.  Pumped out about 2" of water from the rain the day before.  Did my routine skimmer polyester filter media change.  Still a lot of GREEN GUNK, but I do notice that the string algae is starting to go away.  Temperatures today was in the upper 80s and lower 90s and it was mostly sunny.

June 2, 2010 - Changed the filter media three times today, it must be really dirty due to all the rain we have been getting.

June 3, 2010 - Just my regular polyester skimmer filter media change out for the day.  Changed the filter media three times today.

June 4, 2010 - Cleaned out the skimmer filter media today only twice.  The first time was around noon, and the second time was around 9:00 pm.

June 5, 2010 - Did my regular skimmer media change.  I hope this is coming to an end soon.  Today I added 50 ml of KoiZyme, 8 oz of Microbe Lift PL, 3 oz of barley extract with peat.  I also cleaned off the light lenses, they had a lot of green gunk on them. The photos below were taken today...

June 6, 2010 - Just did my daily change of the polyester filter media today.  The water was very clear, and I took some more photos.  Below are a few of them...

June 7, 2010 - Did the usual twice a day filter media change.

June 8, 2010 - Did the twice a day filter media change, however, due to taking some students the the Illinois State FFA Convention, my times were a bit different today.

June 9, 2010 - Changed the media only once in the early morning.  Took some students to the FFA Convention today as well.  When it was time to change the filter media, I decided to give it a try without the media, just my regular 2" skimmer filter pad.  Added 1oz of OneFix today.  One more thing...

CONGRATULATIONS BLACKHAWKS!

June 10, 2010 - Did absolutely nothing to the pond today.  Oh, I did clip the singe lily bloom I had, it bloomed for 5 days.

June 11, 2010 - The 2" filter media is still holding up well.  I have picked out some leaves and other debris, but water is still flowing through just fine.  KNOCK ON WOOD!  Cleaned off the pond light lenses.  Had to clean out the filter media today, it lasted just over two days.

June 12, 2010 - Did a 20% water change today.  Added 8oz of Ultimate, 8oz of Microbe Lift PL, 2oz of Barley extract with Peat, and 25 ml of KoiZyme.  It rained today, and I had to drain off about an inch of water.

June 13, 2010 - The filter media is holding up well so far.  A lot of rain today, but will wait on the draining a bit.  I added 4 scoops of Koi Clay into the pond today.  Ordered some more supplies today, Microbe Lift PL, KoiZyme, Ultimate, Muck Defense, and Koi Food.  I am starting to save my invoices in .pdf format.  I will try to add them to this blog, if possible.  Below are the links to the orders I made today...

June 14, 2010 - Went to check on the 2" skimmer pad media this am, and I noticed a few goldfish feeding around the edges of my skimmer. I was able to capture 2 of them and relocate them to the pond in front of the Jr. High School.  I almost had 3 of them, but one wiggled away from me.  I did rinse out the skimmer media even though it really had not started to choke off the pump, but it was rather filthy with a lot of green gunk.  I took out the big variegated grass plant that was by the skimmer and replaced it with a nice ribbon grass plant.  This grass tends to grow upward more than spreading out like the previous plant.  This way I won't have to battle the grass every time I work on the skimmer.

June 15, 2010 - Added 8 oz of Clear Defense beneficial bacteria to the pond this morning.  I just want to make sure I have plenty of the good bacteria in the pond to help with, well, just about everything.  So far, so GOOD, KNOCK ON WOOD!

June 16, 2010 - Added some Microbe Lift paste to the skimmer filter media after cleaning it this afternoon.  It wasn't choking off the pump, but the skimmer had a lot of bits of leaves in it from where the Koi have been nibbling on the lily pads so I gave it a good rinsing out.  Also added 2 oz of blue pond tint, and 1 oz of OneFix.

June 17, 2010 - Got into the water today to fertilize the row of lilies on the bench.  Water was still cool, but refreshing.  Was able to weed out the dead lily leaves and fertilize the three plants.

June 18, 2010 - Did a small water change today.  Added 25 ml of KoiZyme, 8 oz of Microbe Lift PL, 8 oz of Ultimate water conditioner, and 2 oz of barley extract with peat.  Noticed the small Koi flashing today quite a bit.  I might be due to add some more salt.  I will monitor the situation.  I rinsed out the skimmer media, and when I replaced it, I added the last of my Microbe Lift paste.

June 20, 2010 - Noticed that one of our fish, Opey, was not doing well.  He/She was just still in the water, and would not come to his spot when it came time to eat his noon feeding.  I decided to check the salt level, and it was at .01.  So I added about 20 pounds of salt, and now my salt level is at .13%.  I also added 1 oz of OneFix, 16 oz of Liquid Clear Defense, and 25 ml of KoiZyme.  Opey did come around a bit, and was able to join the rest of the fish at dinner time.    I will check the skimmer, which has not been changed since Friday before I go to bed tonight.  So far so good.  Happy Father's Day!  Rinsed out the skimmer.

June 22, 2010 - Did a preemptive water change today before the big rains came.  I pumped out about 2" of water, and this water was replaced within an hour with all the rain we received, I even had to pump out another inch.  I rinsed off the 2" skimmer media this morning.  Added 2 oz of blue pond tint.

June 23, 2010 - Tested pond parameters today, all were fine, but I do have some rather hard water.  The salt level was right at 1%.  So after all the rain and pump outs, the salt level went from .13% to .1% which is right where I want it for now.  The salt level will gradually go down with water changes and more rain pump outs. If anyone reads this, please let me know what this level of slat will do to my beneficial bacteria.

June 24, 2010 - Added 1 oz of OneFix.  Noticed that the falls end pond lights were not working.

June 25, 2010 - Topped off the water level this morning.  Added 25 ml of KoiZyme, added 8 oz of Microbe Lift PL, added 2 oz of Barley Extract with Peat, added 1 oz of blue pond tint.  Rinsed off the 2" skimmer pad, still a lot of green gunk, but this time it lasted three days.  Headed to Woodstock around 12:30 pm.

June 25, 26, 27, 2010 - Went to Woodstock, IL to celebrate Bob-Bob's 59th birthday.  Arrived back on the 27th, and the pond was in great shape.  I put a new transformer on the pond lights, and got them up and working.  I rinsed off the skimmer pads, it probably could have gone another couple of days.

June 28, 2010 - Added 2 oz of OneFix.

June 29, 2010 - Rinsed out the 2" skimmer media.

Pond Log May 2010

May 1, 2010 - Got up this morning at 5:45, and noticed that the flow of water coming from the falls was reduced.  Yup, you guessed it, the cotton-like filter media was clogged with more GREEN GUNK.  I did my morning cleaning and replacement of the filter media.  The last two days has really dirtied up the pond.  WHERE IS ALL THIS GREEN GUNK COMING FROM?  Put in my monthly three tabs of Muck Defense.  Fed the fish 1/8 of a cup of food.  Checked on the quarantined fish, and fed them a few pellets.  They are still very skittish.  I decided to let my new fish in the quarantine tank got into the pond today.  The water in the tank in the garage was starting to warm up a bit too fast.  They seemed to adapt quickly to their new environment.  Each of them were able to eat during their first group feeding.  I did my weekly cleaning off of the pond light lenses today.  There was A LOT of string algae.  I was able to grab a bunch of it with my hand near the air stone.  I thought this stuff didn't like moving water?  It seems to flourish near the most movement.  I threw in one more Muck Defense tab near the air stone.  Put in 8 oz of Clear Defense, and three tea spoons of beneficial bacteria.  Put in new filter media at 9:00 pm.  Started to rain at 9:25.

May 2, 2010 - Got up this morning at 4:30, I was worried about my filter media choking off the pump, but not to worry, it rained during the night, and the water level was up a bit.  I cleaned the cotton-like filter media, AGAIN, and replaced as usual.  Around 8:30, I drained about an inch of water from the pond to bring it back down to "normal".  There is still A LOT of string algae gowning on the sides of the pond, and the plant pots.  It is EVERYWHERE!  I hope all the beneficial bacteria I put in last night does helps get the nutrient levels down a bit.  Did a bit of side wall cleaning, got quite a bit of GREEN GUNK.  There is still a lot of string algae in this pond.  Put in 16 oz of ULTIMATE, and 3 oz of blue pond tint.  I need to figure out how to stop this string algae!  Added 2 oz of OneFix, just in case.  Time to be patient, if that is possible!?!

May 3, 2010 - Got up this morning at 5:00 to check on the skimmer, but it was doing just fine.  Still a lot of GREEN GUNK, but not enough to choke off the pump.  Did my usual cleaning this AM.  Sent off an email about my string algae issue, and have decided to dose with 25 table spoons of Koi clay.  Some say this will do this trick.  See image below of just a bit of my sting algae issue...

I went home and put 25 scoops of Koi Clay into a 5 gallon bucket.  I then distributed this solution around the pond turning the water a blue-gray color.  I will do this daily or until I see the string algae going away.  Put in another 25 scoops of Koi Clay just before I went to bed.  Cleaned out the skimmer pad at 9:00.

May 4, 2010 - Got up at 5:30 to clean out the skimmer pad, all was well, still a lot of GREEN GUNK, but at least the pump was not being choked.  Gave the fish 1/8 of a cup of food.  The two new Koi seem to be doing well so far.  I have decided to got to Alco or Pamida to buy some quilt batting to use in place of the cotton-like filter media.  The batting is cheap, and I can just throw it away after each use, instead of rinsing it off each time, which is a huge mess!  Purchased some polyester quilt batting from Alco at lunch, also went home a dosed the pond with 25 scoops of Koi Clay again, this was the third dose.  That string algae is growing like mad on the planter pots, as well as everywhere else!  I will keep my fingers crossed.  Put in two sections of quilt batting around 4:00 today.  I will use this, and then just throw it away.  I did my night time filter media change out, and I noticed, with the pond lights on, that there was a lot of string algae just waving in the flow of the water.  I tried to reach into the pond, and grab what I could.  I got enough to fill a small coffee can.  Crazy!!!

May 5, 2010 - Today, the replacement of the skimmer pad is so much easier without having to clean them off, I now just throw them away.  I have pre-cut several sections of polyester quilt batting to fit into my skimmer.  So now, twice a day, I just take out the old one, run my pool skimmer a few times in the basket, rinse off the 2" filter media and replace it, and put in a new polyester quilt batting section.  The entire process went from 20 minutes each time, to only about 2 minutes.  Got to love that!  Fed the fish this morning 1/8 of a cup of food.  I also added 16 oz of Liquid Clear Defense to boost the beneficial bacteria.  When I came home from school today, around 3:30, I noticed the falls were not as full as usual, and of course, the skimmer media was full and choking off the pump again.  I quickly did a polyester quilt batting change, and all was good.  I put up the SOLAR SHADES today as well.  I was able to hand pick a lot of sting algae from the sides of the pond.  The stuff was about 2 feet long, just waving in the pond.  Just think, these are trillions of single celled creatures all strung together to form these long strands.  That is just hard to imagine.  I added 2 oz of OneFix around 4:00.  I added 8 oz of Microbe Lift PL around 8:00.  I did one more change of the quilt material around 10:00, as well as grabbed some more waving string algae.

May 6, 2010 - Did my morning routine of changing the filter media in the skimmer around 5:45.  The water had just started to be choked off a bit, but not enough to choke the pump yet.  I did not feed the fish this AM, I will feed them at noon.  I think they can go to work on all that algae, I hope they get their bellies full.  Put in a few table spoons of beneficial bacteria, removed the 2" filter media from the skimmer, and inserted some black and green matala mat in its place.  It has less of a chance of clogging while we are off to see my oldest daughter graduate from college in Pensacola Florida.  We will be back on Sunday, in the mean time, my father-in-law will be rinsing off the media, and feeding the fish once a day 1/8 of a cup.

May 7 - 8, 2010 - My Father-in-law checked on the pond while we were away.  He rinsed off the matala mat skimmer media and replaced twice daily.

May 9, 2010 - Arrived home at 3:52 pm after a 12.5 hour drive and a total trip of 1,881 miles to Pensacola Florida to see Danielle Graduate.  I am beat.  The pond water was CRYSTAL CLEAR, but there was a lot of string algae all around.  Spent some time hand picking string algae, the toilet scrubber on the end of a pole doesn't seem to work very well.  The stuff is EVERYWHERE and it doesn't look like it is slowing down any time soon.  I replaced the 2" filter media back into the skimmer.  I kept it on the pond shelf while we were gone as to not kill off all the beneficial bacteria.  I also put in a polyester filter pad on top of it, now I am back to my twice daily changing of filter media until I figure out what to do with all the string algae.  I dosed the pond with 25 table spoons of Koi Clay around 7:00 pm.  Changed the filter pad at 9:30, and off to bed, I am a ZOMBIE!

May 10, 2010 - Changed the polyester filter pad at 5:30 AM.  I am currently in the process of doing a 5 - 10% water change.  I try to do this weekly.  I pump down as far as I can as not to choke off the pump.  Then I refill the water level from my sand-point, and then pump back down again and refill, then I do it one more time for a total of three times.  I place the pump on the bottom of the pond when I do my water removal.  Once the water change was complete, I tested the PH, Hardness, Nitrates, Nitrites, Chlorine, Alkalinity, and Ammonia.  All levels were in the in the proper place.  The water was a bit on the hard side, but that was the only red flag.  I added 8 oz of Ultimate, and 12 oz of Pond Logic Crystal Clear Defense.

May 11, 2010 - Did my daily twice cleaning of the skimmer media, or should I say, replacement of the filter media.  I have noticed  the amount of GREEN GUNK is diminishing.   That's a good thing!  I received my shipment from Foster and Smith of Barley Concentrate with Peat during my lunch time.  I put in the initial 8 oz treatment.  I also grabbed several more handfuls of string algae off the sides of the pond.  Tomorrow my order of Koizyme should arrive.

May 12, 2010 - This morning, I did my daily routine of changing the polyester filter media in the skimmer, and it was not even slowing down the flow of water, so the GREEN GUNK has started to subside, KNOCK ON WOOD!  The weather has been so cold, I have stopped feeding the fish.  They have not been fed since Sunday.  The water temp is in the mid 50s.  I have some cold weather food arriving today, along with some Koizyme.  There is still an abundance of string algae, and I try to grab what I can when I see it waving in the water.  It is growing on EVERYTHING!  I added 100 ml of KoiZyme to the pond, this is the first of three doses every third day.  I had to double the dose due to the cold pond water temperatures.  Currently, the pond water is 56º.  Noticed some muck on the bottom near where the liner meets the pea gravel.  I was able to scoop most of it up with a net.  I am wondering if this is the first sing of dying string algae.  Fed the fish an 1/8 of a cup of my new Cold Water Food.

May 13, 2010 - Did my daily switch of filter media this AM around 6:10.  The water level behind the filter media was starting to go down, so the GREEN GUNK is coming back.  Fed the fish and 1/8 of a cup of my new COLD WATER food, everyone was eating, even Baby.  I am still getting large handfull's of string algae off the sids of the pond.

May 14, 2010 - Did three skimmer media changes today, morning, around 3:00, and then at 9:30.  I was gone on the Senior Class Trip, so my daughter Chelsea did the 3:00 changing, for I didn't think it would make it until I arrived home.  There was a lot of waving string algae, and I grabbed what I could, and used my make-shift toilet brush on a broom handle to try and get the rest, but I just don't think it works as well as others have reported.

May15, 2010 - Changed this media this morning around 7:00.  I also put 10 oz of "Liquid Clear Defense" in and around the skimmer.  I put 8 oz of Microbe Lift PL near the air bubble column.  At noon, I am going to add my second dose of KoiZyme near the air column under the bridge.  The water is still cold, so it will have to be a double dose of 100 ml.  The regular dose is 20 ml/1000 gallons.  So I got just a tad more in my 2400 gallon pond, actually it is 2500 with the two 55 gallon drum filtration units. (20 ml + 20 ml +10 ml = a dose for 2500 gallons)  So 100 ml will be the double dose.  Okay, I put in my dose of KoiZyme, and while I was doing my routine cleaning off of the pond lights, I noticed thousands of strands of barley from my barley bail on the bottom of the pond.  They were EVERYWHERE!  I tried to get up what I could, but there is still a lot of them on the sides and bottom of the pond.  So I dosed with a lot of beneficial bacteria today.  I put in 4 Muck Defense tabs, 4 scoops of dry beneficial bacteria, along with the treatment from this morning.  The water is still crystal clear, but this is just one more problem that I did not anticipate!!!!

May 16, 2010 - Did the usual twice cleaning and twice feeding today.  I did not do any thing else to the pond today.  We went to Peoria to buy a new mattress set for Chelsea, spent most of the day working and driving.  I did notice some more string algae on the lights that I had just cleaned the day before.

May 17, 2010 - Did the usual cleaning again today of the skimmer pads.  I had to drain off about 2" of water from the 2" we received during the night.  Very cold and wet spring.  I am still feeding the fish the COLD water fish food.  I added 2 oz of OneFix to the aeration column.  Fed the fish twice today, 1/8 of a cup each time of COLD water fish food.

May 18, 2010 - Again I did my twice daily change out of the skimmer pad material.  I am running low, and need to resupply.  This morning I added my third dose of KoiZyme, 100 ml which is twice the normal dose for a pond of 2,500 gallons due to the cold water temperatures.  My pond is 2400 gallons, and my filter is 100 gallons for a total of 2,500.  This spring has been cold one, it is still in the lower 50s in the morning.  I noticed a lot of wavy string algae once the sun went down, and my pond lights came on.  I was able to grab fist fulls of algae from the pond.  This stuff is CRAZY!

May 19, 2010 - Did my daily skimmer cleaning/change out. I have run out of the polyester material, I will buy some more today during my lunch time. I cut up enough filter pads for 18 days, I hope this is enough.

May 20, 2010 - It is raining today, my pond is a bit low due to my last pump out of rain, so this will be like a mini water change.  I will do my major 10 - 20% water change on Friday, since it is raining today.  Still fighting the STRING ALGAE!  I am thinking about using 2½ pints of Hydrogen Peroxide to take care of the problem.  Waiting on someone else to try it first.

May 21, 2010 - Changed the cotton-like filter media twice today, as usual.  Pulled fist fulls of string algae from the water and the sides of the pond.  Added 100 ml of KoiZyme to the water, this is the 4th initial dose.

May 22, 2010 - Changed the filter skimmer media again twice today.  Started to pull the seedling trees from all the seeds that fell upon the rocks around the pond.  There are thousands of them.  Planted a new plant today we purchased from Ace Hardware to add color to the pond, and to replace the plant that did not make it that I ordered previously.

May 23, 2010 - Did a major water change today.  I would estimate between 20% and 25%.  Added 10 oz of "Ultimate", 8 oz of MicrobeLift PL, and 8 oz of Barley Concentrate Plus Peat.  I drained the water, from the bottom, as far as I could without choking off the pump.  The I replaced the water back to normal levels.  I did this a total of three times.  Picked some more weeds from around the perimeter of the pond.  There is an endless supply!  Temperature today was in the upper 90s.

May 24, 2010 - Got up this morning at 6:05, and the filter media had started to choke off the water supply to the pump, not all the way, but in another hour, it would have been different.  I changed out the polyester skimmer media, and added the last of my initial 5 doses of KoiZyme to the pond.  Even though the water temp has started to go up, I added my usual 100 ml of KoiZyme.  The string algae is still out of control, last night I got a softball sized clump.  For some reason, you can really see it waving in the pond at night with the pond lights guiding the way.  Temperature today was in the 90s.   Changed the skimmer media twice today, as usual.

May 25, 2010 - Changed the skimmer media twice today, as usual.  The water temperature is really going up fast due to the last few days of HOT and HUMID weather.  Big change in such a short period of time.

May 26, 2010 - Changed the skimmer media twice today, but I barely made it to the night time change.  I had to do several scrapings of green gunk off the media in order to make it to after 9:00 pm.  I also added 2 oz of OneFix to the pond.

May 27, 2010 - Did my daily routine with the skimmer media changes.  Will this GREEN GUNK ever go away?

May 28, 2010 - Did the usual twice daily changing of the filter media.  Today was the staff golf outing, and the pond held up well.

May 29, 2010 - Started adding just 25 ml of KoiZyme today.  Also added 2 oz of blue pond tint, 8 oz of MicrobeLift, and 2 oz of barley plus peat.  Also cleaned off the pond lights today.

May 30, 2010 - Changed the filter media in the skimmer twice today.  I also pulled more seedings from around the pond perimeter.

May 31, 2010 - Changed the filter media three times today.  This is probably due to the 1 1/2 of rain we received in about an hour this morning.  The water got a bit cloudy after all the rain.

Pond Log for April 2010

Koi Pond Log for April 2010

April 1, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria. Also added three Muck Defense tabs. The water temperature is now 56 degrees. Fed the fish at noon, 4:00 pm, and 5:00 pm, very small amounts.

April 2, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria. Continue to feed the fish three times a day, small amounts, about 1/8 of a cup.

April 3, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria. The new lights arrived today from Fosters and Smith Aquatics. Replaced the broken set of lights, and put the other set by the water fall. Added 2 oz of blue pond tint @ 4:00 pm. Brought out the Japanese Maples from the garage. Also planted a tall grass in a big planter and placed by the pond. You can see it in the photo above in the upper left hand corner of the pond.

April 4, 2010 - Cleaned the algae off the water falls rock with a brush. Put in 2 oz of OneFix by the bridge at 4:00 pm. Ended my Cold Bacteria regiment, for now the water is getting close to using the regular beneficial bacteria.

April 5, 2010 - Cleaned off the skimmer pad and lava rock. Used a 5 gallon bucket to rinse off the lava rock. Added three tea spoons of "Regular Beneficial Bacteria" by Pond Digger to the pond. The water temperature at 7:00 pm is 60 degrees.

April 6, 2010 - Added one scoop of Koi Clay in a 5 gallon bucket into the falls.

April 7, 2010 - Did a 5 - 10% water change. Cleaned out the skimmer pads and lava rock in skimmer. Added 2 oz of OneFix. Added 5 cups of "Ultimate" water treatment. Added 6 oz of Microbe-Lift PL, this is the second Microbe Lift PL treatment.

April 9, 2010 - Scrubbed algae off the waterfall rock. There was a lot of sting algae getting started.

April 10, 2010 - Removed the lava rock from the skimmer, not sure it was worth all the effort. Cleaned the skimmer pads and replaced. Added 3 tea spoons of "Pond Digger" Beneficial Bacteria. Topped off the water level with about 100 gallons of water from my sand point well system. Purchased a new Japanese Maple today, and placed in a bucket near the pond. Looks nice. Cleaned off both sets of pond lights. Lots of algae, gross, clumpy algae. I wish I could find a way to get rid of it!

April 11,2010 - The water temperature is currently 59 degrees. Added 6 oz of Microbe-Lift PL, and also added 2 oz of OneFix to the water. Water is still crystal clear, however, starting to notice fish poop on the sides of the liner which has a fuzz of algae growing on it.

April 13, 2010 - Added several scoops of Crystal Clear Algae Off near the skimmer and the north-west side of the pond liner. A lot of algae broke loose, and I tried to scoop and scoop with my skimmer net, but I just could not get all of it. I cleaned out the skimmer pads and I hope they will do their job. Added three tablespoons of Beneficial Bacteria by the air system. The pond temperature is currently 69 degrees. Added three scoops of Koi Clay mixed in a 5-gallon bucket and poured around the pond. Took a reading this afternoon and all parameters looked withing the acceptable range. The water was a bit on the hard side, and the PH levels were good, and the nitrate and nitrite levels were on the very good side. I got that going for me. Also, took a water sample coming off the falls, and the water was crystal clear to the eye. Who knows what microscopic monsters are lurking within?

April 14, 2010 - Added 2½ oz of blue tint to pond. Also added 2 oz of OneFix. Rinsed out the skimmer pads, they got very dirty and full just during the last 24 hours. The water temperature is 67 degrees, down 2 degrees from yesterday. Added 20 oz of Pond Logic "Crystal Clear Defense" @ 9:00 pm. This is the first dose of this product.

April 15, 2010 - Did a 5% - 10% water change after school. Cleaned off the skimmer pads, very dirty again, lots of green muck. Added 3 teaspoons of beneficial bacteria. Scrubbed the algae off the waterfall rocks. Re-arranged the water fall rocks and flow from two to one tube, increased the force of the falls. Put in the mesh bag of "Nature's Choice Barley Clarifying Pellets" at the base of the waterfall.

April 16, 2010 - Tested the salt level today, and it is down from 1.1% to just 1% after yesterday's water change. New plants arrived in the mail today, and I was able to get them planted and placed in the pond. (Albescens Rush and Zebra Rush) from grassrootsnursery.com. Added two small fertilizer spikes to these new plants as well as the dwarf cattail plant. (Side note, new microwave and dishwasher were installed today, and Gary McDaniel stopped by for a visit.)

April 17, 2010 - Rinsed off the skimmer pads this morning, I forgot to do it yesterday. Luckily they weren't chocking off the pump yet, but it was getting close. Pond seems to be a bit foggy, but the water coming off the falls is crystal clear. I think the fish are up to something, if you know what I mean! I am not sure, but I think all the pollen may have something to do with the discoloration of the water as well. Off to Saturday School. Purchased some ammonia test strips (EcoSystems). Tested the pond water for ammonia levels, everything was on the safe side, registering 0 (zero) on the scale. Cut a piece of green foam filter media and placed in the skimmer to help skim out smaller pollen particles. Tried out the pool/garden hose vacuum, and was able to get quit a bit of green gunk from the sides. Will do more when I have more time. Cleaned off the pond light lenses. Added 3 teaspoons of Pond Digger Beneficial Bacteria.

April 18, 2010 - Rinsed off the cotton like filter media this AM, it was choking off the pump, but water was still flowing, but just at a low volume. Added 3 oz of blue pond tint, seemed to help a lot with the tea color. I am going to rinse off the skimmer pad again before it gets dark. I will leave the cotton-like media out of the skimmer tonight, but will add it again tomorrow morning. Added 6 oz of Microbe Lift PL, this is the third Microbe Lift PL treatment of the season.

April 19, 2010 - Rinsed off the skimmer pads early this AM. Put the clean pads back into the skimmer, along with the cotton-like filter media. I will clean them off again this afternoon. I don't want to keep the cotton-like media in the skimmer over night, for the one time I did this, it choked off the supply of water to the pump. Water was still flowing, but at a very slow rate. It has been in the lower 40s that last couple of nights.

April 20, 2010 - Rinsed off the skimmer pads after school. Placed some of the cotton-like filter media in the skimmer basket. I will clean it out early tomorrow morning.

April 21, 2010 - Rinsed off skimmer pads early this morning. Placed the cotton-like filter media in the skimmer. I will rinse them off again when I get home from school. There is still a great deal of GREEN GUNK build up on the media after a 12 hour period.

April 22, 2010 - Again, I rinsed off the skimmer at 5:00 this morning, only because I was already up, so I thought I would get it done before the cotton-like filter media, similar to this, got too clogged and choked off the pump. I have two sets of this cotton-like filter media, so when I take one out to clean and rinse off, I place the other in its place. I will try to get some photos of my skimmer area, it is a piece of work. My skimmer is actually a bucket from a cherry-picker truck. Water flows into the skimmer, through the cotton-like filter media, then through a 2" media, and then through three matala mats, black, green, blue in that order, then to the pump, and off to the 55 gallon barrel filter that I built this past fall. So I believe I have plenty of filtration and places for my beneficial bacteria to take up residence. Got home from school, and went right to work rinsing off the afternoon set of cotton-like filter media. Inserted the night-time version of the same media into the filter on top of the 2" media. Also went around the pond and inserted fertilizer spikes into the existing pond plants. I still notice a lot of algae on things. However, when I lifted up the pots from their shelf, I did see where some bacteria had been hard a work cleaning. Now, I if I could just get them to work on everything else!! Wishful thinking. Fed the Koi only once today. Added 8 oz of "Crystal Clear Defense" to the pond water after doing the afternoon cotton-like filter media rinse.

April 23, 2010 - Rinsed off the cotton-like filter media in the skimmer basket at 5:30 this morning. Still a lot of GREEN GUNK, man that stuff is gross. Replaced the dirty material with clean material. After rinsing it off, I now put the semi-clean material in my washing machine on HOT, and do a quick cycle with no soap. The media comes out very clean, and semi-dry. Fed the Koi this morning 1/8 of a cup of food. Cleaned off the skimmer media after school, and replaced with a brand new skimmer pad. Opened up the drains on both filter barrels to drain some of the sediment. Fed the Koi on more time.

April 24, 2010
- Did my regular twice daily cleaning of the cotton-like filter media. Important note: I have not had to remove my regular 2" coarse filter media since I have been using the cotton-like media placed on top of it. Also added 6 oz of Microbe Lift PL. Opened up the valves on both 55 gallon filter drums to drain the pond after about 2" of rain. Cleaned off the pond lights and replaced.

April 25 2010
- Again, did my regular twice daily cleaning of the cotton-like filter media. Noticed that the pond water is becoming much clearer.

April 26 - 2010 - I am continuing the regular daily routine of cleaning out the skimmer media twice daily. The cotton-like filter media is still collecting a lot of green gunk. I wish I knew what this stuff was, it can't be just fish waste, for there is way too much of it every day. Received an email today from the individual I ordered two more Koi. I am trying to come up with a quarantine tank, but I am not having much luck. Below are the two fish that will be here Wednesday.

My order from Dr. Foster's and Smith arrived today, including my de-foamer, electrical connection, and water testing strips for Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite, PH, Hardness, and Alkalinity. I did a quick test, and all parameters were within the acceptable range. I did notice that my water was a bit on the hard side. I put 1 oz. of the pond de-foamer under the waterfalls, and withing a few minutes, all bubbles and foam were gone. I was amazed! Purchased a 45 gallon tote and some plumbing parts to put a drain on it for a quarantine tank. Now all I need is a filter for the system. I already have air stones and an air pump. The new fish arrive on Wednesday. Completed the quarantine tank build by 6:45, so about $50.00 and three hours later, I now have the tank ready and working, complete with filter, waiting for my new fish to arrive on Wednesday. See the photo below...

April 27, 2010 - Did my regular twice daily routine of cleaning out the cotton-like skimmer pads. I sure wish this green gunk would go away. The morning temperature was 48 degrees, rather cool for this time of year. I think once the water temperature goes the beneficial bacteria will take over, I HOPE! Added 2 oz of OneFix after my evening filter cleaning.

April 28, 2010
- Did the twice daily cleaning of the filter media. The new Koi arrived today, and went directly into the quarantine tank that I built on Monday. The package was delivered to the wrong house, but luckily they knew me and gave me a call. Both fish arrived in safe and good condition. They are a bit spooked, but no worse for the wear so far.

April 29, 2010 - This morning there pond was loaded with all types of seeds from my neighbor's trees.  I think I could have opened up a tree nursery with the amount of seeds that are currently blowing around.  My family has orders that if they see them in the pond, to skim them out.  Did my morning skimmer media cleaning.  Checked on the new fish in the quarantine tank, they seem to be doing well. They are still skittish, but I am sure they will warm up to me soon, I hope.  Not looking forward to this afternoon, I suspect the pond will be more seeds than water due to the very windy conditions.  When I came home from school today, the pond was loaded with seeds.  The super windy conditions today really brought down a hail storm of seeds from a wide variety of trees.  After about two hours, I was able to get most of them out of the pond, but they did their damage.  The pond water was crystal clear yesterday, and now it is all cloudy again with dirt and debris that has blown in from destinations unknown.  Did about a 15% water change, cleaned out the filter media, and put in 6 oz of MicrobeLift PL, and 3 oz of blue pond dye.  I noticed a lot of hairy algae growing on the light cords.  This has come up just since last Saturday.  I just don't understand why this stuff keeps growing.  Did a 5 gallon water change in the quarantine tank.  The two new Koi seem to be doing well, so far.  They must be eating, for when I come back form giving them a few pellets of food, it is always gone, but I have yet to actually see them eat.

April 30th, 2010 - Got out to the pond at 5:35 this morning, and the pump was being choked off by all the debris in the skimmer pad.  (A lot of GREEN GUNK!)  The water was still flowing through the filter, but at a much decreased rate of flow.  I think I am back to square one with the GREEN GUNK cleaning after all that wind yesterday.  I will check the media when I go home for lunch, and if necessary, I will do a cleaning then.  Fed my new Koi in the quarantine tank this am.  Went home for lunch, windy just like yesterday, but the pond was relatively clean of debris thanks to the wind yesterday blowing everything away.  I did clean out the skimmer pad, and it was full of GREEN GUNK, but not yet choking off the pump.  Better safe, than sorry!  Again it was very windy when I came home from school, but the pond was not as bad as yesterday.  I think all the seeds have been blown to another state.  Cleaned out the skimmer media around 6:45pm.

Koi Pond Log for March 2010

March 4, 2010 - Added 4oz of Arctic Blend.

March 6, 2010 - Removed three dead fish, one Koi (Sunkist), and two gold fish. Buried them in the garden. All three fish were frozen in the ice.

March 11, 2010 - OPENED UP THE POND today, but with no filtration, just the pump to get the water moving. Noticed some white fuzz on Opi's tail fins. Also, could not find Butters, the Butterfly Koi that looked like Skelekoi. Added the last 3oz of Arctic Blend. Took off the top cover and put in the duck decoys and a barley bail.

March 13, 2010 - Put in 25 pounds of salt to get the level to .01%. Cleaned off the Matala Mat that was in the skimmer.

March 18, 2010 - Took out and cleaned Matala Mat in skimmer. Put in the actual skimmer pads. The water in the pond has a lot of string algae in it.

March 19, 2010 - Came home from school today and the "Cold Bacteria" I had ordered arrived in the mail. Put in 3 teaspoons of cold bacteria. I also put the filter media into the two barrels. Bottle caps and "Bacti-twist" in barrel #1, "Ultra Bio Media" and "Bacti-twist" in barrel #2. Also put in two 23" filter media pads that were pre-treated with Microbe-Lift Gel. (P.U.)

March 20, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria.

March 21, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria.

March 22, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria. Also added 4oz of Blue Pond Tint. Rinsed off skimmer pads.

March 23, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria.

March 24, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria @ 7:30am. Added 2oz of OneFix @ 3:45 pm. I also called the Winston Co to find out more about the OneFix product. I got the number on the back of the bottle. The woman was very nice and informed me that this is beneficial bacteria, and it will not react with other products, and it is very safe.

March 25, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria. AM

March 26, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria. PM

March 27, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria. AM

March 28, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria. AM Two scoops behind the skimmer, and one scoop in the pond. Also added 2oz of OneFix, one behind the skimmer, and one in the pond at noon. The next dose of OneFix will be Wednesday, 3-31-2010.

March 29, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria as before in the AM. Rinsed off skimmer pads after one week. The water temperature is 49 degrees. Took the lava rock bags out of the pond @ 8:00. One of them came apart on the shore, and I spent several minutes picking up lava rocks from the regular rocks. I repaired the mesh bag and put the lava rocks into the skimmer. Just a bit more bio-filtration.

March 30, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria as before in the AM. Took off the black netting @ 3:30 and the water temperature is 51 degrees. Brought up all the plants from the bottom to the shelves. I lifted up the long shelf, thinking I would find Butters, but no such luck. Butters is still MIA. Added three Muck Defense tabs. Put in the pond lights, replaced the yellow bulb, but then noticed bubbles coming from the yellow light. Took out the pond lights and ordered two more sets from here.

March 31, 2010 - Added three tea spoons of Cold Bacteria as before in the AM. Put in several tea spoons of "Pond Scrubber" in the AM. Added 2oz of OneFix @ noon. Fed the fish today for the first time @ noon. Added 16oz of Microbe Lift PL in front of skimmer @ 4:00 pm. (This is the first treatment of Microbe Lift PL for the season.) Cleaned off lava rock with 10 gallons of pond water in one of the blue recycle tubs. Used Microbe-Lift Gel to inoculate the three MatalaMats that go right behind the skimmer pads. Black, Green, Blue, in that order. Let it sit for one hour, and then installed the three mats. Rinsed off the skimmer pads and put the pads and the rinsed off lava rock back in place in the skimmer.
